James Kumi-Diaka, is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Florida Atlantic University, Davie Florida. He received his bachelor’s degree (BSc) in general biology & chemistry in 1969 at University of Guelph, Ontario Canada; his DVM, MSc and PhD degrees in 1974, 1976 and 1981 respectively, at the A.B. University in Zaria, Nigeria. In 2013, he received an honorary DSc. degree from the Collage of Medicine, University of Science, Arts and Technology, Montserrat BWI. His academic career started at ABU, Zaria, and in 1987, he decided it was time to move back to Guelph; where he served as a research associate-post doc until 1990 when he moved to University of Wisconsin, USA as a visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine. In 1994, he moved to Florida Atlantic University to join the Department of Biological Sciences.
Over the years, he has developed and taught several but related upper level undergraduate, and graduate science courses including: Embryology and Vertebrate Morphogenesis (later, developed into comparative vertebrate morphogenesis), Immunology, Cancer Biology and Reproductive pathophysiology (Theriogenology) and Directed Independent Studies (DIS).
Over the years, Dr. Kumi-Diaka have received several academic honors/recognition. His research emphasis has been on phytotherapeutics and carcinogenesis. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he serves on several committees within the universities and associations/institutions outside the universities: i) as a reviewer for several (>21) peer review international scientific journals and, ii) as an editor and/or member of editorial boards of some of the journals; iii) reviewer of immunology text books for publication.
